Straight Talk About Health Insurance

As you do you homework, you’re bound to come across terms and phrases known in the industry as “insurance” speak.

You may be familiar with some of these terms already, and maybe not so familiar with others. In order to make the best choice about health insurance for yourself or your family, there should be no questions or confusion about what’s being discussed.

So, here, in plain and simple language, are some of the most common health insurance terms you should know:

Annual Maximum Benefit Amount.
Simply means the most money an insurance plan will pay for healthcare service in any one year.

Coinsurance.
Instead of paying a fixed amount up front (a copayment), the policy-holder must pay a percentage of the total cost. For example, the member might have to pay 20% of the cost of a surgery, while the health plan pays the other 80%. Because there is no upper limit on coinsurance, the policy-holder can end up owing very little, or a significant amount, depending on the actual costs of the services they obtain.

Copayment.
The amount that the policy-holder must pay out of pocket before the health plan pays for a particular visit or service. For example, a policy-holder might pay a $45 copayment for a doctor's visit, or to obtain a prescription. A copayment must be paid each time a particular service is obtained.

Coverage limits.
Some health insurance plans only pay up to a certain dollar amount. After that, you may be expected to pay any charges in excess of the health plan's maximum payment for a specific service. In addition, some plans have annual or lifetime coverage maximums. In these cases, the health plan will stop payment when they reach the benefit maximum, and the policy-holder must pay all remaining costs.

Deductible.
This is how much money you need to pay out of your pocket before the health insurance plan starts to pay its share. Say you had a $200 deductible per year, before any of their health care is covered by the health plan. You might have to go to the doctor several times before you would have paid $200 out of your own pocket. But once you do, the insurance company will start chipping in on any other expenses you have to pay that year.

Group health insurance.
Health insurance that's issued by a health insurance provider for larger number of people all under a single master policy, issued to their employer or even to an association that they belong to.

Exclusions.
You'll see this term referring to any services that are not covered by your policy. You would be expected to pay the full cost of these exclusions or non-covered services out of your own pocket.

Low income health insurance.
Million Americans who are uninsured, many find themselves in this unfortunate situation because health insurance is unaffordable. For some of these folks, the federal Medicaid program will be the best bet. These days, there are many affordable health insurance policies to choose from.

Out-of-pocket maximums.
This means that the part of the payment you're possible for ends when you reach your out-of-pocket maximum. After that, your health plan pays for any other covered costs.

Premium.
The amount you pay each month for your health insurance coverage.

Small Business Health Insurance.
Many times, small businesses will offer health insurance to the employees. This is often used as way to attract and retain the most talented people. For this definition, a small business is considered to have fewer than 50, employees.

State Health Insurance.
A form of insurance that is available to you if you are not part of a group health insurance plan, if you do not qualify for a typical individual health insurance policy or if you cannot afford health insurance.

Student Health Insurance.
If you're a student and you don't have health care coverage, not to worry. There are still several options. For starters, you should contact your school about the health care coverage they offer their students. Very often colleges will work with health care providers to offer some very affordable packages to enrolled students. In some cases, you can use your student loans to pay for the insurance.

Travel Health Insurance.
This type of health insurance is a good idea when you want to cover medical care received in a foreign country. Your group plan will sometimes limit overseas coverage to emergency care only (and in most cases, you will have to prove that it was an emergency). Also emergency medical evacuation is almost never covered. Even if you're on a business trip, you could still have serious gaps in your coverage.
